Latest NewsAussie Expats in the Money, but Good Times Abroad May Be overSaturday, 27 August 2016

Australian expatriates are among the richest in the world, with one in five earning more than $A322,000 a year. But almost a third are planning to return home, blaming global economic turmoil for limiting their career prospects.

Research by HSBC Bank Australia, based on 3100 expats working in 50 countries, found Australians employed overseas were living the good life, whereas foreign expats working in Australia had the lowest salaries of all the countries surveyed.

Almost half of Australian expats had hired help, such as nannies or cleaners. Foreign expats in Australia were the poorest of those surveyed, with 63 per cent earning less than $US100,000 a year. Expats in Russia, Asia and the Middle East were the highest paid, with those in Belgium and Australia the poorest.

Almost a third of the Australians living overseas are considering a return home. This certainly reflects the strength of the Australian economy and is the reason why there is currently so much demand for houses between $2,000,000 and $5,000,000.
